NOTE: Takes place last night.

You’re sure you want to do this.

Yes, I am.

It’s a hundred thousand dollars, Tommy…

Tommy bit his tongue as he stalked through the Excalibur, forcing himself to focus on the thoughts of the man trailing behind him.

Exactly. Tommy sent back to Jay Kellar telepathically. And considering I have five minutes left to find these goddamn keys, you wanna get out of my head so I can win this bet fairly?

Oh, sure. Fair…pulling the location from the human’s brain. Sure, that’s sportsmanlike.

Seriously, Jay…shut up.

The keys are upstairs.

JAY!!

Go with what you know. That had been Dad’s advice…and once again, Dad had come through with a couple of new tricks that would help Tommy break the ice on his first day at work.

“Ya know, it’s only been a couple weeks, and I’m already sick of this part?” Tommy sighed, making a face as he rolled up the used diaper he’d just taken off of his daughter. And to think, the really gross stuff was yet to come…

Glancing down at the baby laying placidly before him, waiting to finish being changed, Tommy grinned…as much as he could through a grimace. He could do without diaper duty, but at least he had good company.

“You, however,” he went on, smiling down at Mayilia as he grabbed a fresh diaper, “I ain’t gonna get sick of for a real long time.”

She kicked her feet in response, surprisingly strong for such a tiny little creature. Laughing, he made quick work of cleaning her up and getting her diapered before picking her up and holding her against his shoulder again…close enough to breathe in her scent, feel the too-light weight of the little human being in his arms. Instinctively, she nestled against him, arms shifting as her head rested with total trust against his shoulder and one fist found its way to press against her mouth.

Turning his head, he pressed a gentle kiss against her temple. Her skin was so soft, filling out beautifully as she grew by leaps and bounds. It was getting harder each day to tell that she was born premature.

With a sigh, he rocked her lightly as he wandered over to the bed in their hotel room, carefully shifting her as he sat down and shifted to stretch out, settling her against his chest.

“You got any idea how long I’ve been waiting to meet you, little girl? Almost a hundred years, that’s how long.”

She just stared up at him calmly, rosebud mouth working its way open and shut as if she wanted to answer him. He just laughed, gently rubbing her back as he watched her seeming struggle for words.

“Easy, baby girl…we’re gonna have a lot to talk about in just a couple of years.” He teased gently, watching her try to smile as he flashed her one of his own. “The world’s a real big place, bigger for folks like us. I promise you, though, you’ll learn all about it. You’ll get the early start I never had, and the things I got to show you…little bunny, you’re in for a real treat.”

If he didn’t know better, he would have said the look Mayilia gave him was dubious…but as she shoved her fist in her mouth, he knew she’d be eating her words instead of her fingers soon enough.

Tommy sighed, narrowing his eyes at his own reflection staring out of the glass front of the vending machine currently holding his bottle of soda hostage. Instead of shaking the machine, however, he simply glanced around to make sure he was alone, then extended his arm and laid his hand flat against the glass…

He watched with a sort of detached fascination as his own fingers passed effortlessly through the solid pane.

Stretching his arm, he simply grabbed his soda from the robotic arm dispensing it and withdrew it back through the glass again, leaving the machine completely intact as he walked out of the cafeteria and headed for Zee’s room again.

Halfway there, he met with an unusual sight as he passed by the nurse’s station on the fifth floor and witnessed two nurses marveling at a plant that Tommy had seen on the desk, half-dead not an hour before. He added two and two, getting four too late as he felt a familiar hand on his shoulder.

NOTE: Takes place approximately four to five years in the future.

He sat facing her, eyes narrowed. In five years of combat, locked in battle with the forces of darkness, he’d never expected that he would face an adversary as worthy or as relentless as the one that sat before him.

The little baby behemoth with honey-colored pigtails and her mother’s hard scowl, softened by pudgy cheeks and eyes that were still darkening to match her father’s, just like her hair.

There were no words, nothing to describe what he was feeling or seeing…not really. Poetry, maybe…but the only other word for it was terrifying.

“Call it over…go ahead, Tom Tom.”

Gaping at the tiny flame dancing in midair just on the other side of his father, Tommy swallowed hard and nodded. “Yeah…uh…c’mere. Come over here! C’mon!” he crooned, watching in fascination as the tongue of flame obeyed, moving through the circle of Gregory Karras’s arms and over to Tommy as he extended his hand.

“It’s a very basic form of elemental. It will obey any basic command. I can show you how to conjure one.”

“Dad…I still don’t know how this is even possible.” Tommy breathed, rubbing his eyes after the little flame doused itself in his palm. “The guys in the Fraternity told me the power was inherited, but you never…”

“Your energy’s fading.”

“Then let’s do this fast.”

“You could die.”

“If I die here, at least I’ll be back.”

He watched as Dog gave him that look...the one that meant he was going against his gut. Regardless of all the dogma he preached, however, Tommy knew that knowledge had at least a little to do with instinct. Dog didn’t know the things he did...he didn’t have the instincts.

“Then let the rite begin.”

Give in. Just relax, it will be over soon.

Tommy shut his eyes against the violent, silken whisper in the dark and fought not to scream. His body was beaten, his head was pounding, and his muscles were screaming even as his insides threatened to cave in on him. He’d woken up to darkness and pain, but as the minutes, seconds, weeks wore on in his head, he realized there was more attacking him than just a head injury stemming from a Bringer’s human servant.

The cuffs weighing his wrists down were forged by the Darkness. The leg irons, too. The only pair of cuffs not mystically made were the ones that ran through the chains binding him and securing him to the length of pipe just over his head.

He’d popped those cuffs without any trouble. Still, he couldn’t move.

It’s easy. Just lay down, close your eyes. It won’t hurt.

“Shut UP!!!” The scream tore through the darkness with a wail of desperation and pain that made it almost unrecognizable as his own voice. He was starting to believe the silky slide of shadows, gliding over his psyche and burning him almost physically. He couldn’t even focus on his restraints, couldn’t get past that veneer of banality and the deadly mundane. Shaking his wrist made his shackles jingle, running his fingers over them gave him a number, but it slid away in seconds and left him at a loss as to how to get free.
