Go with what you know. That had been Dad’s advice…and once again, Dad had come through with a couple of new tricks that would help Tommy break the ice on his first day at work.
It was just like high school all over again, only high school was, admittedly, a hell of a lot scarier.
He tried not to think about it as he stood in the middle of the Atrium at The Mirage, focusing his attention on tossing cards. Flicking them out to fly through the air, he caught each one as it boomeranged in mid-flight and returned to him. The activity was designed to, and succeeding at drawing a crowd. Both ends of the path were clogged with onlookers watching him toss playing cards…two eyes in each head, too many focused on him and everything he was doing…
Swallowing hard, he tried to calm his hammering heart, pausing for something else to distract him because the cards were no longer working. They were watching that, all of them.
That included the two little boys at the front of the group, eyes wide and jaws hanging open. They couldn’t have been more than five and six years old each…okay, this he could handle.
Walking a few steps closer, he smiled and knelt down before the pair. “Hi.”
“Hi!” the oldest chirped brightly.
“Whatcha guys doin’?”
“Watching. Is that magic?”
“What, this?” Tommy grinned, gesturing with the deck of cards in his hand. “Nah, that’s not magic. I know it looks that way, but you can’t always believe your eyes.”
He paused, pretending to look around conspiratorially as he leaned in towards the boys. “But, uh…do you guys believe in real magic?”
Both nodded in unison, prompting him to regard them soberly and nod. “Okay, then…I’m gonna show you something. It only works if you really, truly believe in magic, so we’ll see what happens, okay? Are you ready?”
With another boisterous nod from the two boys, Tommy grinned and focused his gaze skyward. Shifting his grip on the cards, he sighted one of the palms a few feet away and drew back, flinging a card into the air…
The card sailed high, circled the tree, and came right back at them as a snow white dove.
He was taken out of the moment as applause erupted around him. Blanching, he barely caught the bird as he looked around to find the entire atrium had filled and spilled over, blocking traffic on both sides as spectators watched him work. Blushing furiously, he ducked his head and turned his attention back to the boys, allowing them to pet the bird. When he felt brave enough, he took a deep breath and stood, perching the dove on his shoulder as he addressed the crowd.
“Thank you! Thanks, folks! My name is Tommy, and if you thought that was cool? Get ready to be blown away this summer when my good friend Channing Vale brings The Rapture to The Mirage!...”
