Across the country and around the world, on Valentine's Day morning, friends and family of Tommy Karras awake to find a single long-stemmed rose in their bedroom atop a sheet of thick cream-colored stationery bearing a handwritten note...

Love is one of the faces of Hope, probably its most powerful facet. Even if you're anti-Hallmark or just plain miserable, remember that love is still important. It's one small part of a very vital, very good thing...and no good thing in this world ever truly dies.

Take it from me, you are loved. Believe, and if you don't feel it now, one day you will.

Since the day we first met, I've been crazy about you. I love you like a sister, and I wish nothing but the best for you and Julian this Valentine's Day. Your friendship and your faith mean everything to me, and I'll always be grateful that my daughter's gonna have you in her life when she grows up.

If Zee were here, she'd be with you through this pregnancy, sharing your fears and your joys. She went through the same thing...and though she's not here, I am. So's my family. You've been so supportive and so good to me, I want you to know that I'm here for you just as much. If you ever need me, you only have to call.

I don't think I need to tell you how much I love you, but since I know you love to hear it? Yes, I love you. I love you like those lifetime strawberry milkshakes Dog and the boys owe you. You always say that the only hope you have is me, but you're wrong. You don't realize it, Sass, but you as a person are a rare and beautiful thing. You're vibrant and strong, and you have more faith and love to give the world than anyone in the order could ever dream.

If Hope had a face and a voice, it would be your face, and its voice would be your spirit. You're my best friend, babe, and I will love you from here to Tartarus and back again.

Oh, and another V-Day gift for you? I e-mailed you my mom's phone number. She's a podiatrist and she's really good...you can talk to her about shoes and caring for your feet during your pregnancy. She might have had to switch to flats if she'd carried to term, but Zee was still in heels at six months when she had May. If you get a little help lookin' after your feet? Maybe you won't have to put away those Jimmy Choos for a real long while.
