NOTE: Bendy time to tomorrow morning.

In another life, anonymity was a dream. In this one, it was a reality he relished beyond description.

It was way too hot to be sitting outside, and at a rest stop no less, but this one was crowded and the air was quiet. Voices, muted and still, touched his ears and made him smile. The area was secluded enough to make it less than desirable for a family, but the solitary travelers and pairs of lost souls found a moment to stop here and simply collect themselves. Replenish themselves with food or just a nap, it was a safe haven for his people.

He could feel the gaping hole here…too much hope lost, too much faith gone. Love forsaken, futures left behind with the glittering lights and fast-talking dealers, the dregs of the city on their way out into the world again.

Grinning, he shut his eyes and relaxed, listening to the power…and waited.

After about twenty minutes, the awed whispers finally started collecting his attention, along with the sound of wings flapping. Opening his eyes, he tipped his head back and laughed at the sight which greeted him and had collected a small crowd.

Seagulls. In the middle of the desert.

Standing, he felt his heart swell with the joy of it as he spread his arms and they came to him. They weren’t beautiful, too big and too clumsy, and God knew his clothes were going to regret it later…but they still swept down in a throng and converged on him, landing on his outstretched arms and at his feet. They were surprisingly light, the thick gathering of them cooling the air with memories of salt spray and sea wind as they rose on occasion, one by one, and circled the crowd before returning to him again.

“How’d you do that, man?”

Looking to the voice in the small mass of humanity, he grinned and shook his head. “I didn’t. You did.”

Incredulous looks, disbelief. Amazement, awe…a seed planted in fertile ground that would grow with a little light and a little fresh nourishment…

He flung his arms up, and the gulls flew into the air, rising all around him in a furious cloud of wings, feathers, and a fine salty mist that fell over the entire rest stop as they took flight again.

“What…the hell was that?” A woman’s voice. Breathless, astonished.

Finding her eyes, he smiled and shrugged, bending to pick up his bag and the bottle of water he’d bought.

“What do you think?”

He waved, turned, and walked away, unsure if he would even be remembered later. Sometimes it happened that way…they forgot his face, but not his gift. Unlike the other side, he stuck in their heads, but only what they needed to keep of him.

Today, he was fairly sure he’d stay anonymous. They didn’t need his face…the lonely desert caravan only needed a taste of the ocean.
