The universe is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.

“Do you believe in magic?”
She wasn’t particularly sad that day. Even though all she did was work the Dolphin Snack Bar at the Mirage, her life was good and her day was going well. Hell, she was happy…but when the stranger asked her, out of the blue, that single strange question, she felt her chest tighten and her heart twist in grief. She realized that she hadn’t ever asked herself that question before. She’d never stopped to wonder, to look…she didn’t actually know.
It was hard to breathe for a single, sorrowful second as she met warm brown eyes and found the answer easily. It was there like her next breath, like her pulse: she didn’t have to think about it.
“Yeah.” She replied, relief washing through her as she regarded the man in front of her with a small, surprised smile. “You know? I do.”
The man smiled and handed her a twenty for his food, leaving before she could give him his change…it wasn’t until later that she’d realize she’d been talking to the Avatar himself, Tommy Karras.

Even in the early afternoon, it was hard to see through the crowds surrounding the blackjack table. Still, he caught sight of her smile for only an instant…a strange, awed little twist of her lips, and just for a second he forgot about the ten grand he lost at the tables downtown the night before. For a second, an instant, nothing else mattered but how that girl from the Secret Garden felt…and how he could catch a piece of it.

They passed each other in the locker room, having never spoken before, but as she saw his face, she had to stop and stare at the hopeful expression in his eyes to match his sunny smile.
She didn’t have much left to hope for. She’d been on her own since she was sixteen, a runaway from the Midwest. Now twenty and running roulette, she had nothing but the cute guy at work she’d been working up the nerve to ask out, hoping that maybe…just maybe she had a chance.
He beat her to the punch by stopping that day, finally, and looking at her…then asking if she wanted to have coffee after her shift.

Channing watched the happy couple from her place just inside the door of the theater, two lovers with coffee cups in hand pausing by the box office before stepping up to buy tickets for the evening’s show.
“Chan? We gonna fix those lighting cues before curtain or what?”
“Coming.” She sighed, turning to face Tommy with a grin as she nodded to the door. “Out there…your handiwork?”
“No idea…nope. Don’t recognize ‘em.” He replied, peeking out the door.
“They stink of our influence. Cristal isn’t as good as what they’re giving off out there.”
“I swear, Chan, I don’t know ‘em!”
“Okay, okay, I’m not scolding you!” she laughed, following Tommy back into the darkness of the theater. “I just don’t want you to burn yourself out. You can’t make the whole world happy in a day. You forget that sometimes.”
Tommy just shrugged, a knowing smirk touching his lips as he walked behind Channing.
“Maybe,” he admitted, “but with a little help? I can sure as shit try.”
