[wm] 101.10 - character dossier
Aug. 23rd, 2009 04:55 pmWhat kind of music does your Muse enjoy?
Tommy's favorite is heavy metal, but he's got a soft spot for the stuff he grew up around: classic rock 'n roll and doo wop. Stuff like The Rat Pack and The Beatles are examples of 'comfort music' for him, but his personal favorite band of all time is Alice in Chains.
What era is it from?
Primarily the era he grew up in as well as his parents' generation. He recalls some of the classics from Houdini's time fondly, but the old standard "Rosabelle" is really the only tune from that era that he holds in high regard.
What kind of music does your Muse hate?
Classical bores him, teeny bopper rock, most emo rock. He tends to pick and choose songs over artists when it comes to popular music.
Is your Muse famous?
He'll deny it, but yeah, he is. Lately he's been getting a lot of attention as a newcomer to the Las Vegas magic scene, and the more he ignores the media the more they seem to want to talk to him.
If so for what are they famous?
Tommy began as an artistic consultant to prominent Las Vegas magician Channing Vale, and later was promoted to co-star in her show, The Rapture, the first full scale magic show the Mirage has produced since the departure of Siegfried and Roy. Publicly, he's become popular because of his character in the show (a villainous male lead and sex symbol) as well as for his disinterest in the media. The less he talks, the more they want to hear from him...only part of this is intentional. Artistically, he's been praised for his development of new characters and set dressing for the show, and in the magic community he's been hailed as the heir to Harry Houdini himself for his escapes and public magic demonstrations.
If not, do they believe they will be so someday?
Tommy refuses to accept his own rise to prominence. He works, he lives, and he's really not interested in what the world's saying about him...at least not on the surface. Having dealt with fame and recognition in his previous life, he tends to let the media run his PR and goes about his business. His mythos wrote itself once before, and he's pretty much letting it do the same thing a second time around, intervening only when the hype is personally offensive to him.
Luck, Fate or Self-Determination?
Fate and self-determination. Everything can be changed by a force of will, but he knows some things are inevitable. To that end, he believes it's a man's duty to control every aspect of life that is in his hands and not those of the gods.
What, if anything, can be considered bad luck?
Tommy's not a big believer in bad luck or superstition, except where he knows it to be truth. Well...not much. He says 'break a leg' instead of 'good luck' before a show, and he never mentions Macbeth before a performance. The only big piece of good luck/bad luck he believes in is the use of talismans, particularly the ones that stem from the Fraternity. He's never without a pair of handcuffs, their symbol, on his person. He's even gone so far as to give his finacee a pair of her own to wear in some form. Even his daughter's room has handcuffs painted on one wall, and has a pair of toy cuffs hanging on the end of her crib.
Is your Muse satisfied with their life?
For the first time, yes. He has a child he loves, a woman that completes him in every way, and a job he adores. He has regrets, guilt, and a lot of demons haunting him, but overall has nothing to complain about when he looks into the future.
What improvements would they like to make?
Nothing much, really. He's considered possibly finding a bigger house to accommodate both family and menagerie, for one. He's also got a wealth of other ideas to use in the show, and a few things he'd like to do on his own if he can find the time. In particular, he'd like to draw more, maybe hop on his bike and ride to LA for a week or so, and he's even got some ideas about doing something in television.
How fast do they drive / ride?
Speed is one of Tommy's vices. It's the reason he has a motorcycle, he loves the wind in his hair. He's no speed demon, but if there's no cops around? He'll do a few stupid things on his motorcycle. In cars, it depends on what he's driving, but the same rules apply. Overall, he's a very safe driver.
What is the one thing that could keep your Muse up at night?
Concern for his family, artistic inspiration, thinking about how many avatars are out on the streets when he's at home. He tends to feel guilty that he can't be everywhere at once, even though he knows it's silly.
What is their greatest dream or ambition?
To do his previous name proud. Despite the fact that he knows he was Houdini, he still sees the man he was as a vision he has to live up to, the name a mantle he has to be worthy of.
Did they make it come true, did they fail or are they in the process of going for it?
He's doing the best he can, but if you ask him personally, it's still not enough.
Thoughts on the Death Penalty.
Tommy is for the death penalty, but torn between his reasons. He believes that there are fates worse than death, including life, but also feels that the most grievously severe offenders among men have to be destroyed before they can hurt someone else. He believes in reform, however, and is in favor of a moratorium that would allow for it to take place.
Define 'enough'.
Depends. In his work and in his life, there's no such thing. He can never give, never be, never do enough. In everything else? All things in moderation.
Which is best; honesty or tact?
Both, equal to each other. Too much tact is called lying, too much honesty is called cruelty. There is a balance, and he strives for it.
