“Do you have any fuckin' idea how ridiculous that is?”

Elpis merely smiled, wearing the old skin of Dog Carter as he set the little teddy bear holding a golden apple in Mayilia's crib. He looked just like the man Tommy knew, jeans and a tank top, twin barbells gracing one eyebrow. Yet...Tommy knew it wasn't his comrade in arms, not anymore.

“Keep that in her crib, and she'll never need a doctor. The old saw holds truth, especially when the golden apples of immortality give their blessings to the young.” he quipped in response.

“But she's not...”

“It's a talisman, nothing more. She'll stay healthy as you please, but she's as mortal as you are.”

Tommy hated himself for being instantly comforted as he reached in and rubbed his little girl's stomach, watching as she reached out to grab at the new toy in front of her. He already knew she was an avatar like he was, but if she turned out to be an Immortal as well...if that was even possible...the idea frightened him.

It hit without warning as Mayilia began to whimper in her crib, then wail mightily.

Tommy's head shot up, eyes bleeding red with fury as the hand on his daughter's belly stilled.

“Tommy, don't.”

He was beyond hearing as the void filled him, as he took the energy into himself and drew his hand back, stumbling away from her crib until his back hit the wall. Raw terror was coursing through his veins, making his heart race and his stomach knot. Pure adrenaline bled into every pore like a disease, infecting him, weakening him...

With a strangled scream, he forced his eyes to Dog and Mayilia...the god of hope over his child, the last piece of Ziyah remaining in the world.

“A dozen different ways you could've taken me down now, and you chose the only one that would fail.” he snarled, laughing even as another surge of energy forced him to slide down the wall, huddling in on himself as his body temperature dropped, his muscles beginning to shake as he fought it off. “You did this, didn't you? You took her from me...you son of a bitch!...”

“Epimetheus...”

Meeting Dog's gaze, Tommy watched, shivering and struggling for breath as he moved forward and knelt in front of him. Grimacing a little, as if to smile, he shook his head.

“This is me. This is all that's left.” he choked out, shutting blood red eyes as he struggled against the seeds of Despair that were blooming inside of him, poisoning him with pure energy. “This is all that's left of Ziyah.”

For a while all he could hear was his own heart, threatening to give out, his own ragged breathing in his ears. Then he felt the warm touch of Elpis's hand on his forehead...and he could breathe again.

Tommy all but collapsed, slumping to the floor as he gratefully drew slow, calming breaths and willed his heart to slow to near stillness. With the adept skill of practice, he called his own power to lull his body into rest and heal as best it could. Opening his eyes, he saw the face of Elpis drawn in confusion and concern.

“Your power is unchanged.”

He blinked sluggishly, willing his mouth to work. “I'm...don't understand...”

“Your Titan blood runs true, yet the Darkness found its claim. It makes no sense.”

Tommy shut his eyes then as the trance swept over him, sucking him into the healing darkness.

“Dog...th' baby...”

“Your mother's coming...you won't see me again.”

Tommy didn't get the chance to ask why before the darkness claimed him.
