Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that?
There are three things Kelly “Jelly” Lang is good at, and all three of them involve Tommy Karras.
The first is choosing good men in her life. She’s on a neverending quest to find the next Tommy Karras, and she knows it. She wants the dark, piercing good looks, the soulful eyes and gorgeous hair. She wants the perfect body, she even wants the pale, sinewy feet that she always sees around the office because the man just can’t keep his shoes on. She wants the delicate and gentle way that taut, broad, muscular frame moves and she wants the sweetness of that smile. Modeling her dream man after Tommy, she always comes away with great guys that remain close friends, even if things don’t work out.
The second is achieving her goals. Every dream she shares over chicken salad sandwiches on their lunch hour, every idle notion that he swears to her is solid artistic gold, she lays the victory at his feet. She comes to him with her troubles and lets him talk her out of despair, and she watches as every goal he has he pursues with reckless abandon. He’s got a great future ahead of him as a graphic artist, and now this magic thing he’s doing...he’s going places, and she wants to go the same way.
The third is embracing the world. Not just people, not just nature, but finding the joy in everything around her. Such little things light him up, and she knows she’s not the only one that feels it. When he smiles in a room of people, it catches like dry tinder until everyone is glowing. He doesn’t choose to see light over darkness, he simply does. When others bear witness to it, though...they choose the light. They choose to follow him into that almost religious euphoria and try to find some measure of peace...some ray of hope.
Jelly’s good at finding love, achieving her goals, and grabbing life by the horns. All three things involve her choices...and all three things involve Tommy Karras.
And from her vantage point in the office just across the hall, Jelly Lang knows that the sweet son of a bitch will probably never have a clue that everything she has, she owes to him.
